The Virginia Campione Memorial Scholarship

The Virginia Campione Memorial Scholarship was first awarded in 2006 in memory of my mom, Ginny, who passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. The first scholarship was funded by North Rockland High School and spearheaded by Barbara Pedri as a tribute to Ginny. The Campione family took up the mantle the following year by holding a dinner with raffles for friends and family. The response was overwhelming, leading us to step up our efforts and make the fundraiser an annual tradition.

Now entering its eleventh year, the fundraiser has granted tens of thousands of dollars to worthy North Rockland students heading to college. Every recipient has displayed community mindedness, dignity, and grace, traits that Ginny would have been proud to attach her name to.

In 2009 the fundraiser expanded its scope by also donating flat screen televisions to the patient rooms of the bone marrow transplant unit at the Don Monti Center at North Shore University Hospital. Our guests are also responsible for donating patient room refrigerators for the BMTU. These acts were especially important to my family as my mom spent a month recovering from a bone marrow transplant in that very unit that extended her life by many years. In 2010 and many subsequent years, the fundraiser donated wigs, scarves, and turbans to needy chemotherapy patients at North Shore Hospital. In 2014 our donors helped to fund a mobile mammogram unit that provide no cost mammograms to women in a mobile unit parked outside of Queens County Savings Bank, Ginny's former place of work.

Even before she became ill, my mom was an inspiration to her friends and family. People were drawn to her because of her infectious personality and caring nature. The battle she waged against a disease that would eventually take her life is an inspiration to many. Ginny's memory lives on in so many people, as evidenced by the amazing turnout and support among her friends and family. The Memorial Fundraiser is a small way for Ginny's loving family to recognize and reward those who share her compassion and who share her fight.

This would never be possible without the unwavering support of many special people who devote their time and money to making the fundraiser a success each and every year. We thank you, and hope to see you again at our next event.
